What are Dr. Butner’s areas of therapeutic speciality?

  • I am particularly gifted at connecting effectively with adolescents and helping build bridges of understanding, respect, and motivation between them and their parents.
  • I am skilled at helping spouses and partners in intimate relationships improve their level of understanding, cooperation, trust, and enjoyment of one another.
  • I have a strong passion for helping men of all ages improve their level of self confidence, clarify their direction and focus in life, and improve their relationship skills so that they experience greater joy, fulfillment, and positive impact on their journey.
  • I work with teens and adults in individual and family formats to help improve a wide range of life issues.

What kind of training and experience does Dr. Butner have?

  • I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and have been since moving to Louisiana in 2002.
  • I hold a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Abilene Christian University (1998), as well as a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies (Family Studies / Mass Communication) from the University of Alabama (2003) and a BA in Psychology with a minor in Youth Ministry from Harding University (1996).
  • I served as a youth minister for a year while in college in Arkansas, and served as a family minister in Baton Rouge for five years.
  • I have served as a volunteer camp counselor and volunteer church league youth sports coach, both for several years.

What kind of guy is Roger Butner?

  • I am compassionate and down to earth, able to respectfully connect with all kinds of folks.
  • I am spiritually grounded as a follower of Jesus – ever mindful of how much God has done to pull me up out of a self-imposed pit of destruction, fear, and shame to live a life of purpose, service, and freedom. And know that I do my best to follow after the Jesus who shared compassion, kindness, meals, and hope to all kinds of people around him – especially those deemed “less than” in some way by the dominant culture of his day. My Christian walk these days is about spirituality and life-giving principles – not about religion and life-smothering judgements or rules. Be careful about assuming my positions on matters of politics, religion, sexuality, race, etc. I probably don’t fit neatly into whatever box you may have in mind.
  • I am very accepting of clients of all stripes, providing an accepting, tolerant, and supportive atmosphere as I do my best to help them to grow in their capacity live their unique journeys with confidence, freedom, and effectiveness. Differing ideologies, religious beliefs, and political viewpoints are not barriers for me. Come – be yourself with me, and you’ll see what I mean.
  • I am genuine, gentle, and personable – willing to share from my own life experience when it can benefit my client. I’m quick to see and share the humor in life, and I’m as likely to utilize music or references to tv shows, movies, or video games as I am to draw on books or articles or other more academic sources.
  • I’m great at solving puzzles of all kinds and I’m deeply passionate about nature, wildlife, and photography. You might be surprised how much both of these layers contribute to my abilities and style as a therapist.
